M6 Csk Screw Dimensions Selection Guide | Hebei Wotu Fastener Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

M6 Countersunk Screw Dimensions and Fit

An M6 countersunk screw can sit flush with a surface, but the M6 designation tells you only the nominal thread diameter: 6 mm. It does not define the head diameter, head height, drive or overall length.

For a replacement or new assembly, match the screw to both the threaded hole and the countersink. A screw that threads in correctly may still protrude above the surface or sit too deep.

Match the M6 screw to the countersink

Screw selection details

Compare M6 countersunk screws by thread pitch, referenced standard, head profile, drive, length, thread coverage, material and finish. The mating hole drawing is the clearest way to confirm the head fit.

Criterion What To Check Why It Matters Buyer Tip
Thread diameter and pitch Match the M6 thread designation and pitch to the mating nut or tapped hole. M6 identifies the nominal diameter, but a pitch mismatch prevents proper engagement. Is the mating thread coarse or fine, and is its pitch shown on the drawing?
Head diameter and countersink angle Compare both head dimensions with the countersink in the part. A mismatched head can sit proud of the surface or contact the countersink unevenly. Can you provide the countersink dimensions or the screw standard used in the drawing?
Overall length Confirm that the stated length includes the countersunk head, then compare it with the clamped thickness and available thread depth. Countersunk screw length is typically measured from the top of the head; confusing this with under-head length can lead to the wrong fit. What is the required overall length, and how much thread engagement is available?
Drive recess Identify the drive type and confirm that its recess fits the assembly tool and head size. Different drives need different bits, even when the thread and head dimensions match. Does the drawing call for a hex socket, cross recess or another drive?

Check thread, head and length dimensions

The key distinction is between thread dimensions and head dimensions. M6 screws can have different pitches, while countersunk head dimensions depend on the screw standard and drive style. Specify the applicable standard or provide a drawing rather than relying on “M6 CSK” alone.

Countersunk screw length is generally measured from the top of the head to the tip, because the head sits within the assembled thickness. Check that convention on a drawing before replacing a screw with one measured from beneath the head.

Start with the receiving thread. Confirm its pitch and whether the screw enters a tapped hole or passes through a clearance hole into a nut. Do not substitute a self-tapping screw for a machine screw solely because both are described as M6.

Check the mating countersink against the specified head diameter and angle. A matching thread will not correct a head that stands proud, bottoms out early or leaves too little material around the hole.

Choose the drive for the available tool access and the assembly process, then check the required engagement length and whether the screw needs a full or partial thread. Material and finish also matter if the joint is exposed to moisture or must match existing fasteners.

For a replacement, send the existing screw drawing or its thread pitch, length, head measurements and drive type. For a new design, include the hole and countersink drawing so the mating fit can be checked before ordering.

Criteria Importance Description Example Options
Head geometry Critical where the head must sit flush Compare the specified head diameter and angle with the mating countersink; M6 alone does not establish either dimension. A head with the wrong angle can contact the countersink unevenly.
Thread pitch Essential for an existing tapped hole or nut Match the pitch as well as the nominal M6 diameter. A screw with the wrong pitch should not be forced into the receiving thread. Two screws marked M6 may not fit the same tapped hole.
Length and thread coverage Depends on the joint thickness and required engagement Check overall countersunk-screw length and whether the threaded portion reaches the receiving thread without unwanted protrusion. A longer screw may extend beyond a nut or bottom out in a blind hole.
Drive type Matters for tool access and assembly consistency Select a drive that matches the available tool and the specified head design; changing drives can also change the head dimensions. Replacing a cross-recess screw with a socket-drive version calls for a fresh head-fit check.

What are the standard dimensions of a universal hexagonal self-drilling screw?

What are the standard dimensions of a universal hexagonal self-drilling screw?

Self-drilling screws, also known as “drill screws,” “self-drilling screws,” or “dovetail screws,” are classified into different types based on their application, material, and shape. A standard 6mm self-drilling screw has a flatness of 9.38mm or 9.8mm. A hexagonal self-drilling screw with dimensions 4.5*14*25 means the screw size is 4.5mm, the screw length is 25mm, and […]

How to Choose Self-Tapping Screws for Plastic Parts

How to Choose Self-Tapping Screws for Plastic Parts

Choose self-tapping screws for plastic by matching the thread design to the resin, pilot hole and surrounding plastic, then checking head seating, thread engagement and tightening conditions on actual parts. Screw diameter alone cannot establish a suitable hole size or installation torque. This guide concerns metal screws fastening into plastic components. These screws create their […]

Hex Head Self-Drilling Screws with Cup Washers: Choosing Drill Point and Length

Hex Head Self-Drilling Screws with Cup Washers: Choosing Drill Point and Length

Choosing a hex head self-drilling screw with a cup washer requires more than selecting ST5.5 or ST6.3 and a nominal length. The drilling point must suit the steel it penetrates; the threaded section must engage the intended supporting material; and the head-and-washer assembly must seat correctly on the outer panel. A screw’s drilling capacity is […]

How to Specify Countersunk Head Cross Thick Thread Fiberboard Screws for Furniture Assembly Projects

Fiberboard screws are selected based on more than screw size alone. For furniture assembly and board-based applications, buyers need to match the screw structure with the characteristics of fiberboard, MDF, and similar engineered wood materials. A suitable specification should consider thread design, head style, screw length, diameter, installation method, and application requirements. For buyers sourcing […]

What Should an RFQ Include When Sourcing Dacromet Hex Head Self-Drilling Screw?

When sourcing dacromet hex head self drilling screw, a complete RFQ should define the application, screw configuration, coating requirement, dimensions, and supplier confirmation requirements. Buyers often receive different quotations because suppliers may interpret coating, size, drilling capability, or packaging scope differently. Before preparing a project inquiry, buyers can review the available fastener product categories to […]

How Should Buyers Evaluate Self Tapping Screws for Project Procurement?

How Should Buyers Evaluate Self Tapping Screws for Project Procurement?

#4 self tapping screws should not be purchased from the “#4” designation alone. For a usable B2B specification, the buyer still needs the actual screw diameter, thread form or pitch, overall length, substrate, pilot-hole condition, head and drive style, material, surface finish and quantity. This matters because suppliers may use different naming systems. Wotu Fastener’s […]

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a countersunk screw suitable for a thin cover plate?

Only if the plate can accommodate the countersink without losing too much material around the hole. If it cannot, a raised head or a separate mounting feature may be a better choice.

When would a pan-head screw be preferable?

A pan-head screw does not need a countersink, so it may suit a thin part or an assembly where a raised head is acceptable. Choose a countersunk head when the design needs a flush surface and the mating part can support the recess.

Can I tighten a countersunk screw further to make a proud head sit flush?

No. A proud head can indicate a mismatch in head geometry or countersink size. Extra tightening may damage the screw or mating part without correcting the fit.

What should I send when asking for a replacement?

Send a drawing if you have one, or provide the screw’s thread pitch, overall length, head diameter, drive type and any marking on the original fastener. A drawing or measurements of the mating countersink will help confirm the head fit.
