The biggest price difference is usually not between “bolt” and “nut” as product names, but between standard commodity fasteners and application-specific fasteners. A common hex bolt and matching hex nut can often be priced from a standard description. Anchor bolts, U bolts, thin nuts, coated fasteners or parts made to a drawing need more detail because forming, threading, bending, coating and inspection requirements affect cost.
Buyers should also compare the full assembly cost, not only the unit price. A cheaper bolt without the correct nut, washer, coating or thread tolerance may cause installation delays, loosening, corrosion problems or site rework.
Start with the standard and size. For standard hex bolts and nuts, give the applicable standard if you have one, such as a Chinese, DIN, ISO or project-specific requirement. If you do not know the standard, provide diameter, thread pitch, length, head style, nut height and a photo or drawing. Similar-looking fasteners can have different wrench sizes, thread lengths and mechanical requirements.
Material and strength class strongly affect price and suitability. Carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel are not interchangeable choices. Higher strength can help in structural or mechanical assemblies, but it must match the design load, mating nut and installation method. Avoid ordering a stronger grade only because it sounds safer; it may be unnecessary or unsuitable for the joint.
Surface finish changes both cost and service life. Plain, black, zinc-plated, hot-dip galvanized and other coatings serve different environments. Outdoor, wet, chemical or high-friction conditions need clearer coating requirements than indoor dry assemblies. If corrosion resistance matters, state the environment and expected finish rather than asking only for the cheapest option.
Before requesting bolts and nuts prices, decide whether you need individual items or matched sets. Confirm quantity, packaging preference, inspection documents required by your project, and whether washers or special nuts are part of the order. A useful next step is to send the drawing or standard, size range, material grade, finish, quantity and application so the quotation can compare equivalent parts.
